goddammit they make me so pissed off.
First, they don’t let the Women’s or Queer collective have a stall on Market Day, which is the most important day of the year for any club or association. (Market Day is basically the day where all the clubs get a stall and people come to uni and join them)
Then, we finally get a copy of the UQ constitution and club documents through non-official means (After over a year of trying to see them through official means, all requests were denied or ignored despite the fact any student is meant to be able to request to see them and get them) After reading over the documents, apparently the collectives don’t actually exist - so all meetings they’ve had are invalid. What does exist are Queer Rights Activism Groups and Women’s Rights Activism Groups - however meetings for these groups can only be called by the Union Secretary. No officially called meetings have taken place in recent years, and the Union Secretary is incredibly homophobic. So, there is extreme doubt that any meetings will ever be called.
Basically shit is fucked and there’s not much anyone can do because Fresh (Essentially the Liberal Party, or Conservative party to any non-Aussies) is full of corrupt assholes.

Sky Scarf - Knit one row a day for a year, matching the yarn color to the color of the sky that day.
Awesome!
Freaking awesome! Except I live in Brisbane, Australia, so about 95% of the scarf would be bright blue… x_x
In Australia we have an ostensibly secular and progressive government, which also claims to be fiscally prudent. It’s just blown $220 million on a program which is offensive to the principle of state independence from religious influence.
The reason: having avowed her atheism, Julia Gillard is now desperate to appease the Christian lobby. As such, one of the biggest new spending measures in what was unconvincingly billed as a tough-minded post-disaster budget will see chaplains running about in 3500 public schools, filling kids’ heads with what many people regard as fantastic nonsense.
Here fucking here. Religion has absolutely no place in public schools. Objective study about religion, sure, but indoctrination and preaching? No.
Interestingly, there is a case going to the High Court challenging this on constitutional grounds. (Ron Williams v. Commonwealth of Australia) It’s hearing in August. Hope he succeeds!
edited because goddammit I want to rant more.
I just want to say - I don’t think chaplain religious education is wrong, or bad, or that it shouldn’t happen. I just think it’s wrong that it is these means that are being funded rather than an actual educated, counsellor. Having this in primary schools is so messed up in my head, it’s basically there to ensure indoctrination from a young age. Child has problem, child sees chaplain, chaplain tells child what to do based on their, often evangelical, beliefs, child often doesn’t hear other options. What you need is someone a little less biased, to say this is what some people believe, this is what others believe, what do you think? What do you feel is right? Guh.
